I had the privilege of working with Jamie for the past 6-7 years. Jamie was a rare breed in today’s world: he was a man who viewed the world through a window in his heart. I’d like to share a anecdote that typifies the kind of man I knew. | | | | | Oddly enough, I met Jamie before he started work at Kawartha Chrysler. It was a hot Friday evening and I had recently taken up cycling. One of my favourite routes was to take River Road, which extends from Trent University out to Lakefield. On this day I saddled up as usual and headed out for my ride. It was an unremarkable evening and when I hit River Road I started to get into my rhythm and began to click off the kms – to get into the zone, so to speak. | | | | | River Road is quiet, yet very windy with lots of hidden bends and rather sharp turns. I began to hear the faint sound of a base pounding in the distance ahead. I was coming upon the huge curve just before Lock 24 and I could now hear the noise approaching fast, but before I could even react I was staring down the grille of a silver Olds – in my lane - and had no choice but to ditch and hope for the best. To this day I can still vividly remember the look on the kid’s face behind the wheel as he over shot the turn and nearly took me out. | | | | | The bike and I tumbled down the steep incline end over end and I luckily landed right side up. I took a moment to get my bearings and assess the damage: I was ok but the bike was unrideable, so I hauled it back up to the road. The kid had stopped momentarily, saw I was mobile and took off. As the dust cleared I could see a truck had pulled off just up the road, throwing on its 4-ways after. A guy jumped out and approached me; he saw the whole thing and asked if I was ok. He looked tough with his big build, shaggy hair and goatee, and I suddenly realized I looked completely ridiculous standing there in purple spandex and holding my twin sister’s old pink road bike, wheel rims bent like tacos. I responded a little too quickly, “I’m ok but my sister’s gonna need a new bike.” No doubt embarrassed for me, the guy looked at me with his head tilted, raked his hands through his hair, stroked his goatee and said, “Let’s get those f***ers!!” I laughed and said I might not be much of a fighter in this outfit. We both chuckled. He grabbed my bike and said, “Let me give you a ride home.” | | | | | We walked toward his older Dodge pick-up and tossed the bike in the back. On the ride home we shot the s*** and he told me about his truck. When we got to the bottom of my street I asked him to let me out so my wife wouldn’t see. I explained it might put an early end to my cycling career. He grinned and said “Good enough.” As I grabbed the bike and closed the tailgate, something stuck out in my mind: his personalized plate read ‘CHICO’. | | | | | It was a good year or so later when this old Dodge showed up at Kawartha with those same plates. When I introduced myself neither of us spoke a word of our first encounter. | | | | | To this day I regret not thanking Jamie. You know, I could have had 3 eyes and been wearing a clown suit and it wouldn’t have mattered: Jamie always acted from the heart. He would never pass up an opportunity to help out another who needed him, even a complete stranger. | | | | | More recently this year my sister-in-law has been battling cancer. Although for the most part Jamie kept to himself at work, he made a point to come over each week and ask me how she was doing. This truly speaks to his character. We have lost more than a loving husband and father, and loyal friend and gifted mechanic. Jamie was a kind hearted man of integrity, and he will be missed. | | | | | Thank you, Jamie, for the ride!

We remember Jamie as a young fellow attending St. John's school with our children, then meeting up again when we needed our car checked. Words can not describe how much we mis you already. From the day we met you have always been a wonderful friend co worker and most important, a big brother. You always knew what to say and give great advice. I have always looked up to you as my hero. Your smile could change a bad mood so quickly. Your kind loving heart touched so many people differently. I've been friends with jamie for as long as i've been racing. I used to call him "hoodlum". Jamie was best friends with my long time crew guy Lyndon Paradis and that's how i got to know him. Later on we worked together at Cowan Pontiac Buick in Bowmanville. I sponsored his thunder car back in the day, part of the deal was that i'd buy him and his guys a case of beer every time he won all three races, after the fourth week in a row i told him to buy his own beer as he's breaking me, lol. Jamie and Jo had a business in Peterborough, Auto Fitness, where we would go visit him and just shoot the bull. I had my race car in there a few times to fix some stuff when we didn't have time to take it home, long weekends and stuff like that. Lyndon called me a few days ago and told me the bad news. Jamie will be missed. I've read some of the stories here and it's heart breaking. If Jamie is on that beach, I'm sure Calvert is sitting there with him. We will miss our buddies.

Uncle Jamie... or as we would call him... "Uncle Jay".... One of the coolest guys in our lives. As I sit and think back to all the great days we shared together as a family... brings a tear to my eye... but at the same time brings a smile to my face. I will always remember the great saturday nights at the speedway, watching you "giver" around that oval... I recall 2 inidents out there that have always stuck with me, one night you put the # 25 car over the wall at turn 2... and another time when you wrecked and had some flames under the hood... both of these nights you crawled out of the window calmly like it was nothing .... calm and cool was your way. I am very thankful Uncle Jay had the chance to talk with my girlfriend Heather at Matt and Ambers J&J.... she really enjoyed talking with you about cars, engines, V8 and Hemi conversation... :-] I am a better person for haven known you... You are not replaceable... You will be so greatly missed.... As time passes we will meet again... R.I.P Uncle Jay... you truely rock!

I knew Jamie only a short while. As a coworker he was great Always willing to drop what he's doing to help someone else. The rare times we did talk about non-work related topics, it was clear that he was a man who loved completely. Regardless of anything I will always keep a positive memory of him.

I met Jamie through his sister Kate about 1981. We had many great times while being at his parents home on Hamilton street. The one thing I always remember is the fun we had in the back yard pool. You never knew what Jamie was going to do to any of us before we would enter the pool. With his long hair blowing in the wind and a big smile you always had to keep your eye on him and be prepared to be attacked. I remember the one and only time I saw Jamie in a tux was at his sisters Kates wedding. He was shy but he still had fun. As life does over the years our lives go in different directions. After not seeing Jamie for many years after I did have the opportunity to see him at his nephews J and J in May and the wedding in September82012. When we saw each other we talked and laughed about the fun times years ago and it seemed like it was yesterday that we had just talked. Jamie, I will always have great memories of you and you will always live in my heart. I will have a toast to you come October 26th when along with your sisters and family we celebrate my 60th birthday. Rest in peace Jamie and make those Angel wings fly like the wind. Take care buddy Donnie.
